Sakari Oramo to conduct a Sibelius cycle in London

Sakari Oramo will conduct a complete cycle of Sibelius Symphonies and an assoertment of orchestral works with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at London’s Barbican Centre in the 2017–18 season.

The concert series includes a performance on 6 December to celebrate the centenary of Finland’s independence, featuring the first UK performance of the complete Press Celebrations Music (including Finland Awakes, the original version of Finlandia).

Sakari Oramo has been principal conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra since 2013, and has recorded a complete Sibelius cycle with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (Erato/Warner Classics).

  1. Great news regarding the Oramo Sibelius Cycle. I was interested to see that on the 6th December ‘Cantique’ and ‘Devotion’ are being performed. Composed in 1914 for violin or cello and orchestra. I do recall a memorable concert that maestro Oramo gave during his time at the helm of The City of Birmingham SO. around 2007 ‘Three Symphonic Pieces for Cello and Orchestra’ as it was billed. The first piece was ‘Malinconia’ [1901] which I think was orchestrated by Jouni Kaipainen plus Cantique and Devotion. The performance was most enjoyable and I managed to tape it. These three pieces blended together very well indeed. Much to look forward to at the Barbican next autumn.
